Center Rotovž

The new project of the Rotovž Center was created as a programmatic upgrade of the award-winning competition solution from 2008. The Center is located in the middle of the old city of Maribor, which is in its entirety protected as an urban monument. The planned program is taking place in some protected buildings as well as in two newly built.

The new structures are spatially and programmatically connected to the existing building in Glavni trg 15 and some parts of the town hall Rotovž. All the building volumes below ground are connected by the newly constructed basement space under the entire Rotovž Square, which acts as the central part of the complex. The square is going to be reconstructed in accordance with the original project designed in 1960, which together with its no longer existing recognizable geometry was the work of the architect Branko Kocmut.

There will be three cultural institutions operating in the Rotovž Center complex — the Maribor Library, the Maribor Art Gallery — UGM 21 and the newly established Rotovž art cinema. The new project envisages a rich interweaving of various cultural programs, through which we see it as a significant upgrade to the original project. Throughout the entire process of designing building volumes and arranging programs, we have been following the vision of creating diverse nodes of intertwining programs, in such a way that will satisfy the requirements of all users.
